CRIME FIGHTING TEXT MESSAGING TIP SERVICE LAUNCHED BY SEACOAST CRIME STOPPERS
Citizens can Now Send Text Tips through the Portsmouth Police Department and Anderson Software SMS
For the first time, mobile phone users now have the ability to provide anonymous crime fighting tips through the power of anonymous text messaging. Seacoast Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization that is coordinated through The Portsmouth Police Department and monitored by Detective Tom Grella. Since 1984, Seacoast Crime Stoppers has developed a community offensive against crime, by motivating the public to cooperate with police in solving crimes and in the prevention of further criminal activity. Seacoast Crime Stoppers serves the communities of Portsmouth, Newington, Greenland, Rye and New Castle, New Hampshire as well as Kittery, Eliot, and York, Maine. The text tipping is possible with a program that is developed by Anderson Software, the industry leader in law enforcement tip management software and web applications.
“The popularity of text messaging has created a significant opportunity for the public to help law enforcement agencies fight crime,” said Det. Tom Grella. “The ability for any citizen who owns a mobile phone to assist in crime solving is of great importance to communities globally and we are excited to play such a pivotal role in the transmission of these crime fighting tips.”
"I have been a law enforcement officer for nineteen years and this is by far the most innovative, progressive tool I have ever seen in my career.” “There is no doubt that this program will dramatically increase our crime solving capabilities!"
Using TipSoft Text Tips, information may be anonymously received and securely replied to with complete confidence. The service was built specifically to allow text messaging informants to remain anonymous by encrypting the text messages and routing them through several secure servers, protecting the personal details of the informant.
TipSoft SMS also allows police to respond by text message to the originating cell phone without ever knowing the identity of the individual who left the tip. The user’s information is always given an alias and a unique ID before being sent. This secure application allows the tipster and the investigator to have two-way dialog while always keeping the user’s identity completely anonymous.
Seacoast Crime Stoppers encourages everyone to report information about any non-urgent illegal activity, such as unsolved cases, or information about crimes that are being planned in the community or schools (for example, under age drinking parties).
There are three main parts to a text message Tip:
1. The Short Code replaces a phone number. Anonymous Tips are sent to CRIMES (274637).
2. Key Words are used to ensure that the tip is directed to the proper place. For example, TIPSCS (Tip Seacoast Crime Stoppers).
3. The Message contains the key word initially and then the actual text message.
A tipster sends their first message. They text "TIPSCS" plus their tip information to CRIMES (274637). The tipster then receives a confirmation and a unique code number.
The tipster may respond back by simply replying. No key word or any other identifier is needed for any subsequent contact from that cell phone. You need only text CRIMES (274637) and you are connected anonymously.
A two-way dialog through this encrypted system is possible as well, always protecting the anonymity of the tipster. We will never know who the tipster is.
There is no premium cost for this service. Standard text messaging rates apply for messages sent and received (if applicable). Rates can be confirmed with your service provider.
TipSoft is currently used by NYPD, LAPD, Chicago Police Department, New Scotland Yard and across Canada. Additional information on TipSoft Text Tips can be found on the Web at http://www.smscrimetips.com.
